Common Core Student Recognition Award

The Common Core Student Recognition Award (“Student Award”) is established to encourage and acknowledge students who demonstrate exceptional achievements and growth in their Common Core studies. This award aims to inspire a commitment to lifelong learning and excellence among students. This year marks the inaugural Student Award.

Eligibility

The Student Award is open to full-time undergraduate students who follow the 36-credit Common Core curriculum in any year of study. Students enrolled in the 30-credit Common Core Program or those who are not required to fulfill Common Core requirements for graduation are not eligible for this award.

Remark: We are also exploring the possibility of establishing a similar award for students following the 30-credit Common Core curriculum to ensure recognition of their achievements and contributions.

Application Process

Students must submit their applications using a prescribed Application Form, accompanied by a learning portfolio in English. The portfolio can be presented either as a written document (not exceeding four A4-sized pages) or a video (not exceeding 10 minutes). It should detail the student’s growth and learning experiences from their Common Core courses. Guidelines for preparing the learning portfolio can be found here.

The online application form must be submitted by 23 March 2025 (Sunday). Applicants must complete all sections of the form accurately, as any alterations or incomplete submissions may lead to disqualification.

Selection Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on how effectively the learning portfolio demonstrates the growth and learning experiences from the Common Core courses taken by the student, specifically addressing the following three Common Core Program goals:

  • (a)
Broadening Horizons: The portfolio should provide evidence of engagement with diverse academic disciplines and an appreciation for interdisciplinary achievements.
  • (b)
A Passion for Learning: The portfolio should provide examples or artifacts illustrating the student’s enthusiasm for learning beyond the classroom.
  • (c)
A Lifelong Pursuit of Excellence: The portfolio should include a reflection on the student’s personal growth, career preparation, or contributions to the community, demonstrating a commitment to ongoing development.

Selection and Award Presentation

The Student Award will recognize a maximum of five awardees. A Selection Committee will review applications and make recommendations to the Committee on Undergraduate Core Education (CUCE) for confirmation.

The award will be presented in the name of CUCE to the recipients. Each awardee will receive a $3,000 bookstore gift card and a certificate recognizing their achievement.

The award presentation ceremony will be held jointly with the Common Core Teaching Excellence Award 2024 on 14 May 2025 (Wednesday) at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Atrium.
