A Contemporary Approach to Painting (GNED 2000B)

This is an introductory painting studio course which combines art appreciation with hands-on painting experience. You will be able to understand diverse concepts, theories, problems and production of Contemporary Painting. Selected painting practices of the artists in the 20th and 21th century will be introduced and the stories behind renowned paintings will be discussed.

One of the main objectives of this course is to equip students with the capability to use painting as a medium of expression and communication. The studio sessions will cover practical painting skills such as canvas preparation, paint application, color mixing and some of the essentials of the painting process with mixed media; as well as using acrylic to create painting from still life and paint on unconventional surface in an experimental way. The critical skills of students will also be enhanced through art work presentations, critique and an exhibition.

This course is designed for those who have little or no exposure to the arts, as well as those who have training in one or more art form. All undergraduate students interested in arts and creativity are welcome.
