+ GEC335 China Through the Eyes of the West

3

Mon, Wed, Fri 14:00-16:30
ARG01 Leung Kau Kui Building
This course intends to give students an understanding of how Western views of China have changed through history, and how many of the same views still resonate today. One key theme is that often the West has viewed China in terms of its own needs, desires and fears, rather than through making any genuine attempt to "understand" China as it really is. The history of contacts between China and the West will be largely focused on contemporary texts, ranging through travellers' and missionaries' accounts, novels, poems, periodicals, newspapers, films, etc.
+ GEC365 The Jaguar and the Sun: Latin American History and Culture 3 Tue, Thu 14:00-17:30
GE101 B. Y. Lam Building
A prominent aspect of Latin America is the tenacious endurance of its past. This course will explore the historical roots of Latin American artistic expression today, particularly the role of women, and their impact on art, as producers and subjects. Students will investigate a variety of art forms in the region from visual and performing arts to literature and folk arts. The object in these studies will be to uncover the influences on art exerted by Latin America's culturally diverse history that blends European and African influences with its rich indigenous civilizations.
+ GEC366 Cultural Diversity and Leadership Styles 3 Tue, Thu 14:00-17:30
GEG06 B. Y. Lam Building
This course introduces students to the important concepts of cultural diversity and how differences in culture can impact leadership styles, communication patterns and successful interactions: in particular, how some of these differences may impact on the diverse community that comprises the broader society and workplace. The course will use a faculty-guided approach whereby students learn more about themselves and how their own cultural beliefs have become the lens they use to view the world. Students will have the opportunity to identify some of their own beliefs by reflecting on their personal/family cultural practices and beliefs. They will also collaborate with classroom peers to analyze various perspectives and identify similarities about the cultural beliefs shared by the student group. Class discussions and interactions will revolve around group work as students examine how an individual's cultural beliefs support various leadership styles and the need, in some circumstances, to change personal styles to reach desired outcomes.
+ PHI372 Theories of Justice 3 Mon, Wed, Fri 9:30-12:00
GEG06 B. Y. Lam Building
Justice and its discourse is primarily concerned with the ethics of who in society ought to receive what benefit or suffer which burden. Plato tries to answer this question with the view that justice is about giving people what is due to them. How this issue is to be addressed has been a problem for philosophers from the ancient Greece until the present day. The idea of the social contract, utilitarian, laissez-faire and socialist political philosophies have all addressed themselves to the problem of justice. This course seeks to examine several views of justice and evaluate the historical important theories of justice.
+ TRA224 General Interpreting (P-E and E-P) 3 Mon, Wed, Fri 14:00-16:30
AR128 Leung Kau Kui Building
Building on students' knowledge and practice of consecutive interpretation from their first year of study, this course exposes students to interpreting between Putonghua and English. The course is designed to cater to the potential needs of a workplace where oral communication and mediation between Putonghua and English are necessary. The content covered in this course ranges from general encounters in social situations to business negotiations in commercial settings.
+ TRA306 Literary Translation B (E-C) 3 Mon, Wed, Fri 9:30-12:00
AR128 Leung Kau Kui Building
This course will acquaint students with the ways to tackle problems involved in the translation of different genres, styles and registers of English literary texts of a relatively writerly nature. Students will be encouraged to develop their sensitivity to the linguistic, stylistic and cultural features of such texts and their Chinese counterparts, and to formulate appropriate translation strategies in accordance with the purposes of translation.
